Why Choose an Oral Surgeon For Dental Implants
New York, NY

Dental implants being placed at Manhattan Maxillofacial Surgery Group in New York, NYThere are many dentists who discuss placing a dental implant, but to have the highest rate of success, have your implants placed by an Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon.

Surgeons, such as Dr. Del Valle and Dr. Shahgoli have the added years of training and experience to not only place an implant, but to know what to do when problems arise. Following a thorough dental exam, we will evaluate your dental needs and design a treatment plan that will restore your dental health.

Implant Preparatory Work

There are preparatory steps toward restoring your teeth with dental implants. In many cases, the patient will require a simple bone graft procedure. When a tooth is lost, there is an immediate response of bone resorption that occurs. In the first year following the loss of the tooth, there is a 25% reduction in the width of the jaw bone that once supported the now missing tooth. Though it sounds complicated, a bone graft is quick, easy, and minimally invasive procedure that will assist in bulking the space up. The tissue is opened, and we place small amounts of bone material with the bone, with healing time, this should stimulate bone growth.

Other preparatory work may include maintenance on the health of the patient’s gums. Before your dental implant can be placed, your mouth must be without infection and healthy. We do not want the patient to have untreated tooth decay or active periodontal disease, also known as gum disease. Active periodontitis, can increase the likelihood of the development of infection around the implant. Infection could lead to the failure or loss of the implant.

The Placement of Dental Implants

With healthy bone, and no infection present, we can then proceed to place your dental implant. We will begin with the appropriate level of anesthesia based on your need and health requirements. Dr. Del Valle or Dr. Shahgoli will open the tissue, and then make a space in the bone using a specialized drill. The implant is placed and then closed up with sutures. Most patients find that they only experience limited discomfort in the days following implantation and are able to heal with only the use of an over the counter pain reliever to relieve discomfort. Healing will take approximately three months, and includes not only the healing of the tissue, but the bonding of the bone to the implant. Once the implant is firmly in place, we can then attach the specified dental prosthetic, restoring your missing tooth.

Potential Implant Complications

Having an oral maxillofacial surgeon place your dental implant means that surgery is done with the highest of standards, this will reduce the incidence of complications both during surgery and in the healing process.

A family dentist who has placed hundreds of dental implants does not mean that your dentist understands the prosthetic limitations or the complications that can be associated with implants. As an oral surgery office, we have had to repair many implants that were done by dentists who did not consider proper positioning based on the patient’s occlusion.

Other complications can arise based on the patient’s ability to heal. Conditions such as diabetes, certain medications, infection, or patients who smoke have a slower rate of healing, increasing the likelihood of implantation not occurring. We will take these complications into consideration while creating a treatment plan that is right for you.
