Platelet Rich Plasma


At Manhattan Maxillofacial Surgery Group, we use platelet rich plasma and fibrin as a healing aid during your surgical dental procedures. Dr. Del Valle and Dr. Shahgoli understand the important of healing quickly, to reduce pain and promote proper healing. Using your own blood, this is done in office with zero risk for the transmission of disease.

Platelet Rich Plasma


Commonly known as, PRP therapy, this simple process accelerates healing. PRP therapy has been proven to be a valuable step when having tooth extracted or an implant placed. Studies have shown PRP therapy to be a significant contributor to faster tissue and bone growth. We also find that it reduces the amount of postoperative pain, while promoting tissue repair, and reducing the overall healing time following treatment.

How PRP therapy Works


PRP therapy works because it is taking advantage of your own natural ability to heal at an accelerated rate. When your body experiences trauma it sends specific cells to assist in healing, including platelets. We signal these healing cells to come in larger forces.

PRP therapy begins by first drawing the patient’s own blood, we don’t need very much, just 55 cubic centimeters, or less than 2 ounces. This small amount of blood is placed in a machine, called a centrifuge, that rapidly spins the vial of your blood. By spinning, we are creating a concentration of platelets. Once ready, the blood will now contain between three to five times the amount of healing platelets, or growth factors, than your normal blood. The platelet counts in your normal blood range from 150,000/1L to 350,000/1L, after being spun rapidly, the platelet rich plasma will now have a concentration of at least 1,000,000/1L.

PRP therapy has been found to:

•  Increase the speed of healing of soft issues.
•  Increase the rate of growth for bone, helping bone grafts occur more quickly.
•  Improve the outcome for dental implant procedures.
•  Increase the success of many dental treatments, including sinus lifts, closing a cleft lip or palate, and ridge augmentation.
•  Assist in the healing of bone defects, especially following the removal of a tooth or cyst.
•  Increase the rate of healing following the repair of fistulas between the sinuses and mouth.


Platelet Rich Fibrin


Known as PRF treatment, this is similar to PRP therapy. After the vial of blood is removed from the centrifuge, it now contains a concentrate of platelets, fibrin and white blood cells which contain a growth factor called Platelet Derived Growth Factor (PDGF).
Fibrin is the fibrous, material that your body produces for the clotting of blood.

Once the surgical procedure is completed, immediately after suturing the surgical site, Dr. Del Valle or Dr. Shahgoli applies the PRF to the surgical area in a high concentration. By applying clotting material, this will expedite your healing and decrease the amount of discomfort following your surgery.

PRP therapy has been found to:

•  Assist in socket preservation. Following the extraction of a tooth, we apply bone material that is then covered in a PRF membrane to assist in growing and maintaining the bone.
•  Guided bone and tissue regeneration for maxillofacial surgical treatments.
