Emergency Oral Surgeon
New York, NY

A number of dental emergencies are handled through your family dentist. They are able to repair cracked teeth, perform simple tooth extractions, and assist with tooth pain. Patients are referred to Oral Surgeons for emergency care when the situation is more traumatic. At Manhattan Maxillofacial Surgery Group, Dr. Del Valle and Dr. Shahgoli repair the damage in emergency situations from severe oral and facial trauma. We are able to review the necessary information using our Cone Beam CT and perform the necessary procedures to handle emergency situations.

Facial Injury

Our team at Manhattan Maxillofacial Surgery Group, are experts in emergency surgical extractions, injury repair and restoring a patient’s bite following trauma through oral maxillofacial treatment. Maxillofacial injuries, or facial trauma, encompasses any injury that has occurred to the mouth, face and jaw.

In general, maxillofacial injuries arise while playing sports, engaging in outside activities, motor vehicle accidents, work related accidents, acts of violence, or from an accident at home. Traumatic facial injuries includes injury to the mouth, teeth, soft tissues such as skin or gums, and to the bones of the face, including jaws, eye socket, chin and cheekbones.

Oral surgeons, such as Dr. Del Valle and Dr. Shahgoli are trained and skilled in both the physical trauma and the emotional trauma that comes with facial injuries. These types of injuries are often devastating both physically, and emotionally, for the patient. We are able to provide the emotional support that is needed to confirm the course of treatment and provide the appropriate level of anesthesia necessary to alleviate discomfort.

Soft Tissue Facial Injuries

Many soft tissue injuries include lacerations. Dr. Del Valle and Dr. Shahgoli are trained in cosmetic procedures to place stitches or sutures for ideal healing. They will also inspect facial nerves, glands and ducts in soft tissue injuries, providing treatment as needed.

Facial Bone Injuries

Broken or fractured facial bones, including the jaw, nose, cheek, and eye socket, need to be stabilized for proper healing, just as any bone in your body would. Dr. Del Valle and Dr. Shahgoli can not cast your facial bones as a doctor would with a broken arm or leg, they need to apply a rigid fixation designed for the facial structure, or surgically apply plates and screws to stabilize the jaw. Treatments such as those, or wiring the jaws together, is among the treatment options available in the repair of broken facial bones.

Injuries to the Teeth

Oral surgeons, including our team at Manhattan Maxillofacial Surgery Group, are involved in tooth injuries when the injury includes fractures to the supporting bone, or in replanting teeth that have been displaced. We will need to stabilize the bone or the displaced tooth to allow for proper healing. If a patient has a tooth that is entirely out of the socket, it is important to see a surgeon as soon as possible. Never attempt to clean the tooth, or remove any tissue from the tooth, ligaments that are necessary to hold the tooth in place may still be attached, helping us save the tooth. Place the tooth in milk or if the patient is able to keep it in their mouth without swallowing, that would be ideal.
