Dental Implant FAQ
New York, NY

Dental Implants are rapidly becoming the restoration of choice when a single or multiple teeth are missing. By replacing the root of your missing tooth, we can then place a dental crown, a bridge, or a denture appliance on your newly implanted titanium root, giving you a firm, stable restoration. A restored confidence is one of the many benefits of dental implants. Our team at Manhattan Maxillofacial Surgery Group can provide you with a permanent solution. Working with Dr. Del Valle and Dr. Shahgoli we can design a treatment plan that is right for you.

What are dental implants?

When a tooth is missing, it can be replaced with a couple of options. Patients can have a faux tooth placed with a bridge or denture, which relies on neighboring teeth to keep it in place. Or, for a more permanent restoration, we can create a new root with the placement of an implant, which is then covered with a crown, bridge or denture depending on the number and placement of your missing teeth. A dental implant is used to be that firm post, it is permanently fixed to your jaw through a process known as osseointegration.

Are dental implants healthy?

Yes, dental implants are a healthy option for dental restoration. In fact, having an implant placed is a much healthier option than leaving the space empty. When you lose a tooth whether due to decay, injury, or extraction, there are some responses that then occur.

The first response is an immediate decrease in bone mass in your jaw due to sorption. Your jaw requires the stimulation and pressure that is caused from chewing in order to stay healthy. Without that pressure, your jaw there will be a 25% decrease in the width of bone in that spot during the first year, and it will continue to an overall 4 millimeter decrease in height in the time following. Dental Implants can give your bone the stimulation it needs to stay healthy. The second response is room for your remaining teeth to drift or shift. As the neighboring teeth move, your bite is adjusted. This can lead to bite issues and stress on the jaw joint known as TMJ dysfunction.

How can dental implants replace my teeth?

Once Dr. Del Valle or Dr. Shahgoli have placed your implants, and they are stabilized, we can then place a dental prosthetic over the implant. For some patients, this may mean a dental crown, or a dental bridge or denture appliance. Depending on your needs, it may be necessary to place multiple implants. We will help you determine the best course of action following your evaluation.

What is the rate of success for dental implants?

Dental implant procedures have been used in dentistry since the 1960’s and their use has significantly increased in the past decade. Long term studies have shown dental implants to have the highest rate of success over any other dental restoration. With greater than a 95% success rate, most patients never need to have their implants removed or replaced. Failure in most situations is due to the patient having a condition that prohibits their rate of healing, and if the implant is subject to failure, it is often caught within a few months of placement.
