Some Teeth Need Splitting to Remove Them

Posted on 3/20/2019 by Manhattan Maxillofacial Surgery Group
Some Teeth Need Splitting to Remove ThemSometimes a tooth extraction is simple. It could be because a tooth such as a wisdom tooth is not coming in properly, or there is not enough room in the jaw. The tooth is removed, even though it was not damaged. Often, though, a tooth needs to be removed because it is damaged.

Sometimes the tooth is cracked, other times it could have tooth decay. These extractions will often need the tooth to be split before it can be removed.

Splitting a Tooth

Splitting a tooth is not a complicated procedure. All that it means is that the it will be easier to remove the tooth safely if it is not just one piece. This is often the case with a tooth that is cracked. The crack means that the tooth will not come out correctly the way that it is. If we split the tooth, it will give us more control. We will not need to worry about whether or not the crack will get worse during the extraction, because we will have already taken care of it.

The same thing is true if the tooth is being removed because of severe tooth decay. A tooth that is rotted is not strong, and it could break off in parts during the extraction. That is why we will sometimes split the tooth. We want to remain in control.

Splitting a tooth may sound like something that is extreme, but it is really quite common. If you have any concerns about your extraction, please let us know ahead of time. We would be happy to explain the entire thing to you, and also to put your fears to rest. Extractions are common, including extractions where a tooth needs to be split. It will all help you to have a healthier mouth.
