Signs You Suffered a Broken Jaw

Posted on 5/10/2019 by Manhattan Maxillofacial Surgery Group
Signs You Suffered a Broken JawIf you have recently suffered some kind of trauma to your face, whether an accident or falling or even an injury from sports, you may have a broken or fractured jaw and might not even be aware of it!

Let's look at some of the symptoms associated with a broken jaw bone and what you should do about such an injury.

Symptoms of a Broken or Fractured Jaw Bone

The jaw bone is one of the building blocks for a healthy mouth; it helps you breathe, eat and speak and if you have recently suffered some sort of trauma to your face, it is possible that it could be fractured or even broken and you may not even know.

The first thing you should do if you suspect that your jaw bone may be fractured, broken or dislocated is of course call our office. We can get you in right away for an exam and x-rays to see for certain what the problem is.

Be on the lookout for facial bruising or swelling, while the bone itself will not swell, the tissues surrounding the bone help support it, and a break or fracture will also damage the tissues. Numbness may also accompany bruising and swelling. If your jaw feels stiff or tender when you bite or chew, this could be another symptom of a broken jaw.

Damaged or loose teeth are another sign that things are not right in your mouth, and an x-ray can tell us if your jaw is broken or fractured and causing your teeth to become loose.

Remember, an injury to your jaw bone is considered an emergency situation so call us immediately if you suspect that you may have injured yourself in this way. We will see you right away and treat you so that you can make a full recovery!
