What is Endodontic Surgery?

Posted on 1/10/2019 by Manhattan Maxillofacial Surgery Group
What is Endodontic Surgery? If our dentist tells you that you need endodontic surgery, you may shrug your shoulders. The reason for this is simple. Most people don't know what it means. Before undergoing this procedure, take some time to learn what the surgery involves what it will do and how it will affect you.

Saving a Tooth

When you have a problem with the tooth, the hope is that there is something that can save the tooth. Most people hope for the easiest solution. They hope a deep cleaning will help repair any damage to the tooth. If that does not work, they may hope that all they need is a simple filling. The next step that many people think about is a root canal. But when the root canal is not enough to save a tooth, endodontic surgery is a possible solution.

The reason that some of the other methods fail is because it is not easy to spot all the problems of the tooth. Small fractures and hidden canals can cause root canals to fail. When that happens, it is time to take the next step.

Explaining Endodontic Surgery

The option of endodontic surgery allows us to find the small fractures and hidden canals that the x-rays missed. The surgery can also remove any calcium deposits in the root canal. It also can help repair any damage to the root surface or bone.

There are different types of surgeries that fall into this category. One of the most common is a root end resection also known as an apicoectomy. This procedure helps when there is still inflammation or infection in the root.

Although all surgeries are scary, endodontic surgery is a relatively minor procedure. Technology and medications make it a fairly simple and painless procedure while helping save a tooth.
