Could Your Mouth Be Helped with Surgical Orthodontics?

For most bite problems, orthodontics, such as braces, are enough to help solve the issue. However, this is not true in all cases. Many bite and alignment issues require more than just braces. Some issues need correction with surgical orthodontics.

What is Surgical Orthodontics?

Surgical orthodontics, also called orthognathic surgery, is a type of orthodontic procedure that corrects more severe orthodontic issues, including misaligned bites and abnormalities in your jawbone that cannot otherwise be corrected with braces or other orthodontic appliances. The procedure is used to treat adults.

Your jaw continues to develop into your late teens, and it must be done growing in order to have the surgery done. Once surgery is complete, allowing the jaw to align properly, then braces may be used to fix your teeth.

How Does It Work?

If you have been recommended for surgical orthodontics, your dentist will refer you to an oral surgeon. The exact procedure being done will depend upon your specific needs, and it could take several hours.

After surgery, you will need a couple of weeks to heal before you can start getting back into normal activities. Once your jaw has healed, then your orthodontist will apply braces to correct your teeth. The process could take anywhere from six months to a year.

Benefits of Surgical Orthodontics

One of the biggest benefits of surgical orthodontics is the restoration of a beautiful smile. Other benefits include:

•  Improved oral health.
•  Better bite.
•  Elimination of jaw pain.
•  Easier to eat.
•  Better speech.

Are There Any Risks Associated with Surgical Orthodontics?

Much like any other surgical procedure, there are some risks associated with surgical orthodontics. However, these risks are minimal, as the surgery has been performed successfully for years. Your oral surgeon will be able to answer any questions you have about the procedure to help you understand it.

Surgical orthodontics can help to fix a severely misaligned bite when regular orthodontics just won't cut it. Contact our office to learn more and find out if it is the right choice for you.
